Reconnect with yourself. Find a moment of stillness. Begin again, just for today.
Reiki is a traditional Japanese practice that encourages relaxation, mindfulness and a greater awareness of the relationship between mind, body and energy.
Developed by Mikao Usui in Japan in the early 20th century, Reiki is a practice rooted in the understanding that our mental, emotional and physical experiences are interconnected.
The word Reiki is commonly translated from two Japanese words:
Together, Reiki is understood as a universal life energy that flows through all living things.
Reiki practitioners work with this concept through a gentle practice involving meditation, focused intention and the placement of hands on or above the body.
A Reiki experience provides an opportunity to slow down, relax and turn your attention inward. It can become a space for self-reflection, mindfulness and reconnecting with yourself.
Rather than focusing on changing everything at once, Reiki invites you to become more aware of what is happening within you — physically, mentally and emotionally.
A practice of mind, body and awareness.
At the heart of traditional Usui Reiki is the understanding that personal well-being involves more than the physical body.
Our thoughts, emotions, attitudes and daily experiences influence how we feel and how we respond to the world around us.
Consider how stress can affect your breathing, how worry can make it difficult to relax, or how emotional tension can leave you feeling physically exhausted.
Reiki encourages us to make space for stillness and awareness.
Through relaxation, meditation and mindful attention, we can begin to recognize our thoughts, notice our emotional responses and become more conscious of the habits and patterns that influence our everyday lives.
This is where Reiki and mindfulness naturally come together.
The practice isn't about forcing yourself to feel differently. It's about creating the space to notice, understand and reconnect.
At the heart of Usui Reiki are five simple principles, often called the Five Reiki Precepts.
These principles offer guidance for living with greater awareness, compassion, gratitude and integrity.
One of the most meaningful parts of these teachings is their opening phrase:
JUST FOR TODAY.
Think about how often we overwhelm ourselves by trying to change everything at once.
We promise ourselves that we will never worry again, never become angry, never make the same mistake or always respond perfectly.
But personal growth doesn't happen all at once.
Mindfulness teaches us to return our attention to the present moment. Instead of becoming consumed by the past or overwhelmed by the future, we learn to work with what is happening right now.
Just for today.
One day. One moment. One conscious choice at a time.
The Five Reiki Principles offer a gentle reminder that we can approach life differently, beginning with the choices we make today.
I choose awareness over reaction.
Anger is a natural human emotion, but we don't have to allow every emotional response to determine our actions.
Mindfulness encourages us to pause and notice what is happening beneath the surface. What triggered the feeling? What am I reacting to? What do I need to understand?
Rather than suppressing emotions, we learn to recognize them and respond with greater awareness.
I choose to return to the present.
Worry often pulls our attention toward things that have happened or things that might happen.
We spend so much time anticipating problems, imagining outcomes and trying to control circumstances that haven't even occurred.
The practice of mindfulness reminds us that we can only work with the moment we are experiencing right now.
We can acknowledge our concerns without allowing them to consume our entire day.
I choose appreciation over expectation.
Gratitude encourages us to recognize the things we might otherwise overlook.
It doesn't mean ignoring difficulties or pretending everything is perfect. It means allowing ourselves to notice the good alongside the challenging.
A moment of sunshine, a kind conversation, a quiet morning or simply having time to breathe.
When we become more mindful of our everyday experiences, we create opportunities to appreciate what is already present in our lives.
I choose honesty, intention and integrity.
This principle reminds us to approach our responsibilities and daily actions with sincerity.
Mindfulness isn't limited to meditation or quiet moments. It can also be reflected in the way we work, communicate, make decisions and care for ourselves.
Being present means giving our attention to what we are doing rather than moving through life automatically.
Small, intentional actions become part of a more conscious way of living.
I choose compassion.
Compassion begins with the way we treat ourselves.
We can be quick to criticize our mistakes, judge our emotions or expect ourselves to have everything figured out.
This principle encourages us to approach ourselves and others with patience, understanding and kindness.
It reminds us that everyone is experiencing their own journey, and that our words, actions and intentions matter.
The phrase Just for today is more than a comforting expression. It offers a practical way to approach mindfulness and personal reflection.
Manageability
Committing to an ideal for one day feels much more achievable than promising to change lifelong habits overnight. We can work on one intention at a time.
Presence
It brings our attention back to the here and now. Rather than becoming consumed by yesterday or anxious about tomorrow, we learn to focus on what we can influence today.
A fresh start
Personal growth isn't a straight line. There will be days when we become frustrated, worry unnecessarily or fall back into familiar habits.
That doesn't mean we have failed.
We can acknowledge what happened, reflect on our experience and begin again.
Every morning offers another opportunity to practise.
You don't have to get everything right. You simply have to remain willing to become more aware.
Modern mindfulness encourages us to observe our thoughts, emotions and physical sensations without immediately judging or reacting to them.
This is important because our mental and emotional experiences can influence how we feel physically.
Stress may contribute to muscle tension, disrupted sleep or changes in breathing. Worry can make it difficult to relax. Emotional strain can affect our energy, concentration and general well-being.
Usui Reiki teachings similarly emphasize the importance of cultivating a healthy mental attitude alongside spiritual practice.
Rather than trying to control every thought or emotion, we begin by noticing.
Awareness gives us an opportunity to make more intentional choices.
Through Reiki, meditation and mindful reflection, we create opportunities to slow down, observe our internal experiences and reconnect with ourselves.
Awareness is where intentional change begins.
A Reiki session is an opportunity to step away from everyday distractions and spend time in a relaxed, quiet environment.
You remain fully clothed and typically rest comfortably while the practitioner uses gentle hand placements on or just above the body, depending on your preferences and consent.
Some people describe feeling warmth, relaxation, stillness or a sense of calm. Others experience subtle sensations, emotions or simply enjoy having time to rest.
Every experience is different.
There is no particular sensation you need to experience, no special way you need to feel and nothing you need to achieve.
Reiki is a complementary wellness practice. It is not a substitute for medical assessment, diagnosis or treatment.
The intention is to provide a supportive space for relaxation, mindfulness and personal well-being.
Reiki can be explored in different ways.
It may begin with a personal Reiki session, develop into a regular self-practice or become part of a broader journey of mindfulness and self-discovery.
Through traditional Reiki teachings, guided meditation, energy awareness and reflection, you can begin developing a more intentional relationship with yourself.
You might explore:
There is no single way to approach this journey. You can begin with curiosity, take your time and discover what resonates with you.
Before moving on with your day, take a few moments to pause.
Take three slow, comfortable breaths.
Allow your attention to settle. Notice what is happening without needing to change or fix anything.
Ask yourself:
Today's mindful mantra:
I release the pressure to figure everything out.
I welcome this moment.
I give myself permission to begin again.
